Scott Cummine put up four atlas stones in less than 30 seconds, the last weighing 365 pounds.

Seven of the strongest men in this half of the country were in Altona July 3-4 for the Western Canada Strongman Championship.

Scott Cummine of Saskatoon won five of seven events on his way to victory.

Altona competitor Eric Sawatzky finished fifth overall, but managed a second place finish in the wheel barrow event.

John Moerike of Campbell River, B.C. came in second with Maurice Paquette of Regina coming in third.

The top three will represent Western Canada at the nationals in Quebec in a bid to become Canada’s Strongest Man.

Organizer Brent Hamm said this was the first time the Westerns were held in a small town, but added competitors were pleased with how it went.

“The guys really enjoyed it in Altona,” he said.

The weekend saw a couple of packed bleachers as announcer Brad Provick kept the crowd revved up.

They in turn tried to urge the competitors on to new records.

The results were impressive.

Maurice Paquette lifted 850 pounds on a bar, including two stones that weigh 320 pounds each, as part of the Flinstone Deadlift.

The harness pull was won by Scott Cummine as well. He dragged a 23,000 pound truck for 80 feet in only 30.23 seconds.

He also won the medley. In that he carried two kegs (220 and 255 pounds) each for 25 feet. Then he carried an 850 pound yoke on his back for 50 feet and dragged a 600 pound chain for 50 feet.
