Nobody shied away from taking the body when necessary.

The W.C. Miller Aces kicked off their regular season on home ice with a win over the visiting Carman Cougars on Oct. 23.

Dallas Klassen scored a pair of consecutive goals and Riley Braun was amazing between the pipes as he turned away 37 of 38 shots in the 3-1 win.

The MEC had more than 350 fans out as the evenly matched teams battled.

The first period saw Dallas Klassen score for the Aces, less than four minutes into the game. Assists went to Mitchell Klassen and Haydon Friesen.

About the same amount of time into the second period, Klassen scored again to make it 2-0, this time unassisted.

The Carman Cougars however weren’t about to let the game go without a fight.

They played strong hockey, and were rewarded about 12 minutes in to the middle frame as Taylor Dick took the assist from Mikey Lyon to come within one.

There may not have been much scoring in the third period, but there was plenty of action as both teams tried to better their score.

With only 34 seconds left on the clock, Ryan Kehler scored the empty net marker from Nick Thiessen.

Great net effort

Both goalies were outstanding, with Carman’s Nathan Yeo stopping 28 of 30 shots.

Coach Rob Smith described the game as “a solid team effort.”

The Aces also took to the road this week meeting up with the Pembina Tigers in Pilot Mound on Wednesday. Results were unavailable as of press time. Next action will see them host the MCI Blues today (Oct. 30) in Altona at 8 p.m. They will visit the Morden Thunder at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 31, and will host the PCI Trojans on Nov. 6.
