As the Altona Maroons prepare to kick off their 59th season, there’s a few players to watch.

Although who exactly is returning has not been released, some of the scorers fans have come to know and love will be back, and may be setting records.

Jon Froese is one scorer that is expected to continue turning heads.

Entering his seventh season, Froese is ninth in all time Maroons points scoring.

That’s amazing when one considers he only played 162 games and earned 319 points.

In fact the only other player in Maroons history that boasted more points with fewer games played was Bob Toews.

Toews was a local superstar. He averaged 3.5 points per game, earning 360 points in just 103 games. He remains seventh in all time Maroons scoring.

Froese is currently 35th in SEMHL all time scoring and needs only 24 points to surpass former Maroons player Ed Martens to be in the top 30 all time SEMHL scorers. Most players in that short list played more than 10 seasons.

Chad Wrixon, an import forward is tied for 11th in Maroons all time scoring.

In five seasons, he played 126 games and scored 133 goals and 129 assists for a total of 262 points.

Wrixon will not be with the Maroons this year because of a broken femur he suffered in the offseason.

The league has more scorers to keep an eye on.

Morden’s Jeremy Matuszewski has played 326 games in 11 seasons and has 487 points for 15th in SEMHL history.

Ryan Dyck is ranked 17th overall with 478 points in 269 games. Dyck started in Morden before playing in Altona and Carman.

Despite the existing sharpshooters, Altona Maroons record holders need not worry just yet.

Mike Kehler has a firm grasp on the Maroons scoring title. He earned 729 points in 357 games for first in Maroons history and fifth in SEMHL scoring.

Second place is Harry Buechert who played in Altona and Morden in his career, earning 509 points. He is 14th overall.

Getting the SEMHL scoring title will be hard work for any player.

Currently first place of all time is held by Rob Hamm, who played 16 years in the league. He has 452 goals and 466 assists for a total of 918 points.

There’s been some pretty tough competition over the years. But Altona boasts a proud history when it comes to senior hockey, and are the only team to equal the league’s record of 59 consecutive seasons.

The Maroons played their first game in February of 1951 in Sunflower Gardens, the former arena in the heart of Altona.

Although they have won many championships over the years, the Maroons have not managed to lift the trophy for quite some time. In fact the last time they won the SEMHL championship was the 2001/02 season.
