Crews were hard at work installing Altona's new lift station on the northwest end of the community on Nov. 2.
A large hole was dug, and the 27 foot tall prepackaged lift station was placed inside. Concrete was used to hold it in place, and gravel was added to ensure stability. The installation was an all-day affair, beginning around 9 a.m. and proceeding until the sun set.
Town engineer Bill Loewen said the project is necessary for the continued growth of the town. It will handle all the future sewage from this quarter section," he said. That includes the planned residential developments, and the industrial park needs as it grows.
A force main will be installed that will connect the station to the new lagoon.
Because the sewer system is a gravity based system, the town requires lift stations to pump sewage to a higher level so it can continue to be gravity fed to the lagoon. This is the fourth lift station installed in Altona.
A temporary one that is being used on the northwest corner of town, will be removed once the new one comes on line, sometime this winter. "It's the only way to get (sewage) from this part of town," Loewen said.
This lift station, as well as the other three in Altona, have been equipped with control panels that could, in the future, be set to phone a preset number in the case of any issue. The lift station was paid for by infrastructure funding from the federal and provincial governments.
The town received $312,666 as the combined funding from the other levels of government, and will pay about $156,000 toward the project. Loewen said the cost of the project is anticipated to come in at or under budget.
