Auction to help local immigrants

Fine furniture up for grabs

Posted 17 days ago

It was a very generous donation that will go a long way to helping new local immigrants if the Build a Village committee gets their way.

Chairperson Ray Loewen said a member of the community has given their group a boost.

"Somebody donated pretty much a house load of fine furniture," he said.

Rather than use the furniture to outfit homes, Loewen said they thought they could get more mileage out of it if they made it available to the community as a fundraiser.

"We're holding a silent auction to give everybody in the community a chance to bid on it," he said. "All the funds will go toward helping refugees (settle in Altona)."

The auction will be just a small part of the event. It will also include a bake sale, and entertainment.

The auction itself opens at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, with the official evening running from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The silent auction also concludes at that time.

The entire event takes place at the EMM Church in Altona.

Although Build a Village is known locally for organizing trips to such locales as El Salvador, Loewen said they've changed their focus more recently.

"In the last year or two, we're using that same name to focus some of the projects locally, with refugees," he said.

And because all the items have been donated, Loewen said every penny received from the community will help local refugees.
