Shaving heads for cancer

Tara Braun joined her brother for a double shave.

The second annual Twister Headshave Fundraiser raised close to $30,000 for CancerCare Manitoba.

The Morris event was spread out over two days including high school, minor and MMJHL hockey games as well as a silent auction and a pork on the bun supper.

It was started after Dale Rempel was diagnosed with cancer. Rempel was instrumental in bringing the Pembina Valley Twisters to Morris, and is still involved in the club.

Organizer Tara Chammartin said they couldn't have been more pleased. "It went awesome," she said.

Up to six chairs were filled at one time as volunteer hairdressers shaved 35 people who had collected pledges for the event.

Another 10 to 15 people stepped forward for the head shaving in support of the cause, including two Stonewall Jets players who agreed to a quick shave before Saturday night's game.

But it wasn't just heads being shaved.

Tim Hickie, who lost his son to a rare form of cell cancer in September of 2005, put his back into the cause.

He volunteered to have his back waxed if the right amount of money was raised. Not only did the $200 quickly come from the crowd, but a few brave spectators took on the added challenge of paying an extra $50 to rip a strip.

Chammartin said some went even farther. "One got his leg waxed and a Twister player actually got his armpits waxed," she said.

Eight high school hockey players also got their heads shaved prior to the Friday night game against Carman.

Chammartin said the weekend was a great one as a fundraising and community event.

The rink was packed for the various games including the many minor hockey games on the weekend. The local teams work pink jerseys in honour of the event.
