Some kids in the central region are active this winter, thanks to KidSport and the funding they delivered. The Central KidSport committee approved 137 applications worth $27,223 for the fall funding.

That brings this year's total to 193 children assisted and $32,174 spent.

The KidSport committee credited several regional sponsors for their help in funding the program. They also highlighted local sponsors including the R.M. of Rhineland and the R.M. of Morris.

"With the continued help of community groups, schools, municipalities and corporate support, the committee hopes that more funds can be generated in 2010 so that more children are given the opportunity to get off the sidelines and get involved with organized sport," they said in a press release.

And KidSport funds are used locally. A breakdown shows that the towns of Altona, Emerson, Morris, Rosenort and St. Jean all used funds. In fact from those five communities 33 children were supported with $4,664.

The rural numbers were very similar. In the rural municipalities of Montcalm, Morris and Rhineland, 34 kids received $4,939 in funding. The largest amount of regional money was awarded to 58 hockey players for a total of $14,133.

Figure skating, swimming, gymnastics and soccer follow closely behind.

Other sports included badminton, baseball, basketball, bowling, football, ringette, softball, synchronized skating and volleyball.

The most expensive sport was hockey where applicants received an average payment of $243.67.

The cheapest was swimming where the average applicant was funded to the tune of $52.70. To donate go to www.kidsportcanada.ca.
