    • Wednesday, November 11, 2009

  • The Remembrance Day ceremony takes place at 10:30 a.m. at the Gretna Elementary School.
Remembrance Day on Nov. 11 commemorates Canadians who lost their lives during World War I, World War II and the Korean War.
The two minutes of silence is in honour of the men and women who serve our country in time of war. This moment of silence and reflection helps us to remember the sacrifices these men and women made for us and for our freedom.
The first Remembrance Day, held in 1919 throughout the Commonwealth, was called Armistice Day. The day commemorated the end of the First World War on MOnday, Nov. 11, 1918, at 11 a.m. - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
